CO₂ storage under the North Sea seabed: TotalEnergies and Aramis

TotalEnergies enables large-scale CO2 reduction for industry in North West Europe.

We are preparing the storage of CO₂ in our depleted gas fields beneath the Dutch North Sea seabed. These offshore storage locations will become part of the Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) infrastructure of Aramis.

Together with our partners, Shell, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), and Gasunie, we are working within the Aramis initiative to realize an effective, large-scale CO₂ reduction solution for industrial customers in Northwest Europe.  This approach is particularly suitable for sectors where lowering carbon emissions in the short to medium term is challenging, such as steel and cement manufacturing, refineries, waste incineration facilities, and the petrochemical industry.

In this way, we make an important contribution to the CO₂ reduction targets for 2030 set out in the Dutch Climate Agreement and the European Green Deal. Aramis is aiming for a final investment decision in 2027 and an operational start in 2029. The Aramis infrastructure will be opened to third parties, allowing new industrial customers and storage fields to be connected.

TotalEnergies and CCS

We are committed to reducing CO₂ emissions from both our own operations and those of our customers as much as possible, and to capturing and storing remaining emissions. That is why we focus on the development of Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) systems, such as Aramis.

Globally, we allocate 10% of our annual R&D budget to this area. Our target for 2030 is to develop a CO₂ storage capacity of more than 10 million tonnes per year.

In the first phase of the Aramis initiative, the depleted gas fields of TotalEnergies and Shell – referred to as the Launch Stores – will have a combined storage capacity of 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year (Mtpa).
